This Privacy Policy explains what information The Couch Insider (“we”, “us”) collects when you visit couchinsider.com, how we use it, who we share it with and the choices you have. If you have any questions, email us at [email protected].

1. Who we are

The Couch Insider is an independent technology publication available at https://couchinsider.com. We are responsible for the personal information processed through this website. You can reach us at [email protected] or through our contact page.

2. Information we collect

  • Information you send us: when you use our contact form or email us, we receive your name, email address and the content of your message.
  • Account information: if you create an account or log in (for example, to save bookmarks), we store your username, email address and the profile details you provide.
  • Technical and usage information: like most websites, our servers and service providers automatically receive your IP address, browser type, device type, referring page, pages you visit and the date and time of your visit.
  • Cookies and similar technologies: we and our partners use cookies, local storage and similar technologies, described in section 5.

Comments are currently closed on our website. We do not knowingly collect sensitive personal information, and we do not ask you to provide it.

3. How we use information

  • to operate the website, deliver pages and keep the site secure;
  • to respond to your messages, correction requests and other inquiries;
  • to understand how visitors use the site so we can improve our content;
  • to show advertising that keeps the site free to read, and to measure how that advertising performs;
  • to prevent spam, fraud and abuse, and to comply with legal obligations.

Where the GDPR or UK GDPR applies, we rely on your consent for non-essential cookies, including advertising and analytics cookies; on our legitimate interests to run, secure and improve the website; and on legal obligations where they apply. You can withdraw your consent at any time.

4. Advertising

We use Google AdSense to show advertisements, and we may work with other advertising technology providers, including TagMesh (tagmesh.io). These third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website and other websites.

If you opt out, you will still see ads, but they will be less relevant to you.

5. Cookies and similar technologies

Cookies are small text files stored on your device. Local storage works in a similar way inside your browser. We use them for the following purposes:

  • Strictly necessary: security and performance cookies set by Cloudflare, and login cookies set by WordPress if you sign in.
  • Preferences: local storage used to remember your bookmarks, the articles you have already viewed (so a view is counted only once) and interface choices.
  • Analytics: Google Analytics cookies that help us understand how visitors use the site, loaded through Google Tag Manager.
  • Advertising: cookies set by Google AdSense and other advertising partners to show and measure ads, as described in section 4.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Blocking some cookies may affect how the website works. Where required by law, we ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies.

6. Third-party services we use

  • Google Analytics and Google Tag Manager (Google LLC): website analytics. Google Privacy Policy. You can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.
  • Google AdSense and other advertising partners: advertising, as described in section 4.
  • Cloudflare: content delivery, website security and protection against spam and abuse. Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
  • Google Fonts: website fonts are loaded from Google’s servers, which receive your IP address.
  • Gravatar (Automattic): author profile pictures. Automattic Privacy Policy.
  • Embedded content: articles may include embedded videos, posts or images from other websites (for example YouTube or X). Embedded content behaves as if you had visited the other website, which may collect data about you and use cookies.

Links to our social media pages (Facebook, X, Pinterest, Instagram and Reddit) take you to those platforms, which have their own privacy policies.

7. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share information only with the service providers and advertising partners listed above so they can provide their services, when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of our users and our website. Some of these providers are located outside your country, including in the United States, and process data under their own safeguards.

8. How long we keep information

We keep messages you send us for as long as needed to respond and to keep a record of the conversation. Account information is kept until you ask us to delete your account. Analytics and advertising data are kept according to the retention settings of the providers listed above. Server and security logs are kept for a limited period for security purposes.

9. Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal information, to object to or restrict certain processing, and to withdraw consent. California residents may also have the right to know what personal information is collected and to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information for targeted advertising, which you can do through the advertising opt-out links in section 4 and your browser’s cookie settings.

To make a request, email [email protected]. We may need to verify your identity before responding, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you can also complain to your local data protection authority.

10. Children’s privacy

Our website is not directed at children under 13 (or under 16 in the EEA and the UK), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

11. Security

Our website uses HTTPS encryption, and we take reasonable measures to protect the information we process. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will change the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be highlighted on this page.
